A Kingdom Mourns Its Son
1992–2026 · Omukama of Tooro
Dominion Assemblies International Ministries joins the Royal Family, the people of Tooro, and the entire nation of Uganda in mourning His Royal Majesty Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, a king who received the crown in childhood and carried it with dignity throughout his life.
His Majesty ascended the throne on 12 September 1995, following the passing of his father, Omukama Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. At just three years old, he became the youngest reigning monarch in the world.
For 31 years, he carried the responsibility of the Tooro crown, preserving the kingdom’s identity and cultural heritage while encouraging young people to appreciate their history, embrace responsibility, and serve their communities.
His Majesty passed away at the age of 34. In his honour, the Kingdom of Tooro entered a period of nine days of mourning, while flags across Uganda flew at half-mast.
A Reign That Began in Childhood
A Three-Year-Old King
When his father died suddenly in August 1995, Prince Oyo was barely three years old. Days later, he was enthroned at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal. Too young to climb onto the throne himself, he was lifted onto it as the world witnessed a child assume a responsibility that would shape his entire life.
His accession placed him in the record books as the youngest reigning monarch on earth.
King Oyo grew up simultaneously as a schoolboy and a sovereign. He was raised by his mother, Queen Best Olimi Kemigisa, guided by regents, and surrounded by a kingdom that watched his growth with affection and hope.
A Guardian of Tooro's Heritage
Each year, during Empango, the anniversary of his coronation, King Oyo participated in the traditional rituals handed down through the Babiito dynasty. He blessed the royal regalia, received the spear, and sat among the clan heads and elders of Tooro.
Under his reign, the traditions and cultural identity of Tooro continued to be preserved. The drums did not fall silent.
He also encouraged young people to value their history, take responsibility, and make meaningful contributions to their communities.
A King Among His People
Those who met His Majesty described him as a quiet and modern king who balanced the responsibilities of royalty with a life of study, travel, and service.
He stood alongside the elders and chiefs of his kingdom, beside his mother, the Queen Mother, and with his sister, Princess Ruth Nsemere Komuntale.
His reign gave Tooro a youthful and influential presence both within Uganda and beyond its borders. His years of service will remain an enduring part of the history of the Kingdom of Tooro.
A Testimony That Outlives Him
In this season of grief, we draw particular comfort from His Royal Majesty’s public profession of Jesus Christ as his Lord and his testimony that he was born again.
His earthly responsibilities were carried with distinction, while his confession of faith revealed the spiritual foundation upon which he placed his eternal hope.
As we remember his life and mourn his passing, we honour not only the king who served the people of Tooro, but also the testimony of faith he openly professed.

A Letter to the Royal Family of Tooro Kingdom

We pray that Almighty God will surround the Royal Family and the people of Tooro with His comforting presence—giving strength for each day, peace in every moment of sorrow, and unity throughout this period of mourning.
